Term 1: Sept(normally 1st Sat after school reopens) – Dec (normally 1st Sat)
Term 2: Jan (normally 1st Sat after school reopens)- End of April (depends on Easter)
NB : Last class of each term is an open seisiun run from 9.30am – 11.30am with refreshments for students and parents/family of our younger students.
Registration is on the first day of each term and classes commence on the same day.
Seisiun: Seisiúns are normally run every month during term time on a week night and alternate between Malahide and Kinsealy branches. This is an excellent opportunity for students to practice and improve.
Regular Competition Events:
Feis Átha Cliath – normally in March.
Dublin Fleadh– normally the weekend after the May Bank Holiday (reduced entry fees for Comhaltas members)
Leinster Fleadh – normally mid July. Only 1st and 2nd places in the Dublin Fleadh, qualify.
Requirements for above events: There are strict rules for eligible tunes and teachers will advise. Parents and students are encouraged to discuss this with the teacher. Application forms will be available from the front desk and you will be advised of closing dates.
Lessons: Each lesson lasts ½ hour and students should have a notebook, a pencil and ideally a recording device for homework. Students are normally assigned to a particular teacher at the beginning of each term, depending on ability and timing. On occasion teachers may be replaced by a suitably qualified substitute if they are unavailable on a particular day. When students have achieved a certain standard with their chosen instrument, they are taught tunes from “Cois Tine”, a book of tunes produced by Malahide Comhaltas, which is available to purchase. When sufficient progress has been made students have the opportunity to join the Malahide/Kinsealy Band at Under 12, 15 or 18 level. A recommendation from the teacher is required before a student can try out for the band and practice is usually held on Wednesday evenings in St. Nicholas of Myra School on the Malahide Road.
Practice: Remember daily practice for 10 minutes on each instrument goes a long way towards progression on the instrument.
Comhaltas is run by volunteers and the AGM is usually held in October. All students and volunteers must be affiliated to Comhaltas and this is done at September registration for classes.
Information is given through regular newsletters, via the website, web text and verbally. NB: If you reply to text please state who you are/student name.
